I very strongly urge every firearm owner attend a CPL firearm training class taught by an NRA certified instructor.
A friend had recommended "Top Gun Shooting Sports", a local gun store with an indoor range and firearm training classes. I did some internet research, found their prices reasonable and the staff very professional. I made my purchases there and registered for their CPL training class. They offer free limited range membership with every firearm purchase.
My steps were:
a) Reserved a seat in a CPL class taught by an NRA instructor.
b) Put a semi-automatic hand gun in lay-away.
c) Went to my local police for a purchase permit. The detective did a background check and gave me a short test. They also provided me with a CPL prep kit.
d) Returned to the gun shop and completed my purchase. The gun shop people filled out the sellers portion of the purchase permit.
e) Returned to my local police department with the partially filled out purchase permit and the firearm for the "Gun Safety Check". The detective completed the permit, safety checked the weapon and gave me the green firearm safety registration card that must be carried by me with the weapon.
The firearm was registered to me, only I can transport it. I cannot lend my firearms to anyone.
Before I received my CPL, the firearm could be transported by me only to a limited number of destinations. In "Transport Mode" the firearm must be unloaded and locked in the trunk. The ammo must be separate, usually in the passenger compartment.
In a van or similar vehicle without a trunk, the firearm must be locked and inaccessible to the passengers. A locked, cabled gun box is usually used. Note, magazines are considered part of the firearm and must be with the firearm not with the ammo.
The registered handgun can now be kept in the home. Go here to see the legal safety precautions that must be taken. One of my first purchases was a special handgun safe. The safe has a special locked, quick open door to keep the gun(s) safe and inaccessible but with fumble free access should one be needed in an emergency.
The CPL classes had a waiting list so I used the time to learn as much as I could. I bought training videos, searched the internet for all the information I could find. I fired 100 rounds weekly at the range trying different techniques learned from my research.
Upon successfully completing the class, the instructor provided me with the necessary certificate of completion. Later that week I applied for the CPL at the Sheriff's office on Henry Ruff Road and Michigan. The fee was $105 + $10 for the photo. I received my CPL by mail in 70 days.
With the CPL I can carry concealed nearly everywhere except federal buildings, the places listed here and other places where " No-Firearms" or "Gun Free Zone" signs are posted at each entrance. It is their right to prohibit firearms. I refuse to disarm, it is my right not to patronize their unsafe businesses.
One safety point: Never, never pass your weapon to anyone loaded. Always remove the magazine and/or expel any chambered rounds first. Double check the chamber then point the muzzle to a safe spot and click the trigger.
